Winter Car Care: 8 Things to Do Before the Temperature Drops

Why Winter Prep Matters

Cold weather exposes every weakness. A battery fine at 10°C might fail at -12°C.

1. Battery Test

Auto parts stores test free. Over 3 years old or under 80% of rated CCA? Replace.

2. Tire Check

Minimum 4/32" for all-seasons, 6/32" for snow. Use the tread wear indicator bars moulded into the tread, or a depth gauge. If tread is under 3mm, it's time to replace.

3. Wiper Fluid and Blades

Winter formula rated to -30°C. Summer fluid freezes on windshield. New blades if streaking.

4. Coolant Check

50/50 antifreeze/water mix. Most shops test free. Low antifreeze can crack your engine block.

5. Emergency Kit

Jumper cables, blanket, flashlight, ice scraper, small shovel, cat litter (traction), water, snacks.

Battery is the one people overlook. Stranded twice in my life, both times old batteries that tested fine in summer.
